Sunday Devotional with Putting On The New- Are You Watching The Signs?

“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him” (Matt 2:1 & 2).

“After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh” (Matt 2:9-11).

Merry Christmas everyone! Praise God for his protection and guidance as we head into 2017. I was reminded by Holy Spirit of the three Wise Men and all I could do was smile. Christmas, though fun and festive, can be such a hectic time of year. Many times it’s these distractions during our travels which threaten to take us away from focusing on what truly matters. I am sure, during this biblical time in history, the Wise Men had hectic schedules like many of us do today. However, I doubt they were shopping or hanging lights at their home, for there wasn’t any Christmas yet. Perhaps at that time they were counseling the thousands struggling with why the Messiah hadn’t come yet to relieve them of their burdens. Can you imagine the hundred’s showing up at their door in need of help? I’m sure we all can relate, since our daily responsibilities tend to pull us every direction too.

However, in this time of frenzy the Wise Men were able to look up and notice the star in the sky. How many times, in the midst of the madness, have we received a sparkling message from Holy Spirit, a nudge, or a word of knowledge, only to disregard it because we were too busy? The Wise Men have reminded me that God is always trying to get our attention, for there are signs all around us full of answers to what we have been praying about. Perhaps if we pay attention, like the Wise Men did, God might be leading us to pack our bags and follow the star shining brightly in front of us. Maybe your star leads you to a new home, a new job, a new church, more godly friends, reconciliation with family, peace about a loved one lost, financial stability, marriage, healing or hope.

The Magi not only followed the star, but upon packing their bags they were prompted to brings gifts. Something tells me that God didn’t give them a full briefing prior to them setting out on their long journey, but He told them enough so they would be excited about the promise to be revealed. Perhaps your healing, or solution will come when you decide to give rather than receive this year. Perhaps God is wanting you to rejoice in the journey, because during your travels you will draw nearer to Him. You are safe my dear friends, because like the Magi, God will go ahead of you telling you what to do, what to say, and who to trust.  I am not surprised that the Magi already knew what to do upon their arrival, for God promises to never leave us nor forsake us.

This Christmas…follow your star!
