As I was visiting this amazing place, Emeralds Bay, I could not help but think of the infamous line in the book of Ecclesiastes when the writer , Solomon, son of King David, utters the words that there is nothing new under the sun. What a statement to make, and furthermore how does one get to a place , a perspective in his or her life where nothing is new under the sun?
As I think about Solomon’s life I was reminded that he was the man who was told by God himself to ask for whatever he wanted and it would be granted to him. For the readers of the word we marvel at that question, and wonder what sort of man would you need to be to receive such an honor from the Lord himself? I will leave that to the seekers to ponder, and for the sweet Lord to answer; in His appointed time.
Solomon answers the Lord by saying this, “Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” So, how does a man go from this beautiful , humble, posture to writing these words , towards the end of his life,
“Meaningless, Meaningless, Meaningless!” some translations read, “Vanity, Vanity, Vanity!”
Oh , how the mighty have fallen. Solomon in his decadent, over the top, life wants for nothing, and everything his eyes see…his eyes get. Maybe he should have said- consumption, consumption, consumption- for we need to learn ,as humans, that more is simply more, but if your “more” gradually leads you to a tasteless, numb existence then you need to retrace your footsteps to see where you might have gone wrong. Having wealth, power, and everything you want at your fingertips doesn’t mean you appreciate life or the simple beautiful wonders that arrive with it. Remember deep calls to deep, but deep doesn’t call to shallow.
Take the Triune God , for example, even though he owns everything, and all the money in the world is his he is never puffed up in his head. Imagine He dwells at the highest and most prestigious table, and somehow even after He has been around since the beginning of the beginning, of time, he is never bored. How amazing is it that the Triune God is still capable of watching a flower bloom as if it were for the first time.
Why do you ask? Because for the sovereign Lord everything is new under the sun! God doesn’t lose his zeal or joy for what he has created simply because he has seen or experienced it before. Just because God has seen someone experience their gift of Salvation before he doesn’t look down and say- oh that is old business and I’ve seen that a thousand times. No, the God you serve , along with the angels in heaven, Rejoice each and every time because it is beautiful, and unique no matter how many times he has witnessed it.
So when you take a look at my Emeralds Bay remember that there is always something new under the sun, and through Holy Spirit you can revisit things over and over ,and over again and have a new experience each time. Learn to look and experience things through God’s eyes, and watch your mundane world come alive!
