“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace…” Ephesians 6:13-15
Since I was a child I have been often asked had I dressed properly that morning. I laugh when I think of it now, because as I have grown older it has most certainly gotten harder to ,ahem, put on the right outfit. I love clothes, but this scripture has used clothes to describe to us all how important it is to make sure we get dressed with the clothing and armor of God before walking out the door. Have you soaked up God in your spirit so when insults, negativity or your boss who likes to micro-manage comes heading your way you are still able to stand firm?
The belt of truth is one of my favorite pieces of clothing because we all know if you don’t have a belt on , chances are your outfit might just fall down at your feet. In this scripture it is a metaphor for the word of God . Many people think it is all about memorizing scripture and to some extent this is true, but in my experience it is much more than that, for when I was in trouble it was the scriptures that meant so much to me, scriptures that brought me so much comfort in the past ending up being the exact scriptures I was able to call to memory when needed during my shake down. It was those scriptures , after stumbling on them, that brought me such peace and clarity during my present troubles.
This scripture asks the question, ” Are your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace?” When trouble comes your way are you rooted, stable, and firm in what you know to be true about our Lord and Savior so others have trouble when attempting to shake you up and down? Do you know the promises of God in your heart so when a bad day comes along you still have your peace and joy? I know it is tough and often a challenge, but we must get dressed properly in the morning and look to God for strength and encouragement.
When you know who God is in your life he promises to give you peace in your mind and spirit. So I ask, have you gotten dressed properly this morning?
