Are You Happy?

I remember watching this movie and a couple who had split over ten years prior were talking about his soon to be nuptials, shortly, with someone else. The question came rolling off of her lips, “Are you Happy?” I will never forget what he answered,

“The problem with people is they never know when they are happy, and it only seems when they look back over their lives they can indeed agree that there were many moments of happiness , but while in the moment they seem to never, fully, know it. So, maybe if you ask me in another 10 years I will be able to tell you.”

I could not help but relate to his less than joyous response for I too have been a victim of not knowing when I was happy, and so happiness had no choice but to pass me by undetected. There is nothing worse than not knowing when you actually have had it good in your life. Unfortunately human nature leads many people into complaining about the endless wants and desires that they think they need and want. Normally most individuals end up desiring frivolous needs which led me to wondering… is there such a thing as being happy? And furthermore what does one do when the finish line to happiness keeps on moving? I have always heard that joy was more solid and happiness  was just fleeting, temporary, and weightless, but I have to say no matter how old or how young you are there are many who would probably agree that everyone desires to have at least one slice of the great big pie called happiness.

Summer nights while enjoying the orchestra, traveling to Portugal and Thailand with endless eating are all moments that just make me smile, and confirm inside my mind that I have at least enjoyed special times in my life. Happiness might seem temporary, but it is as real as you and me, and when I combine that happiness with the solid base I have in loving, and serving the Lord of my life I can’t help but feel pure joy!

You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.( Psalms 16:11)

I love this scripture because it reminds us all, that desire with all our hearts to sustain our fleeting happiness, to look to the one, Jesus, who has made known the path of life. I tell you the truth ,when in doubt, stick with the one who knows the future, the past and the present and therefore can direct your footsteps all the way to your storybook ending. I promise you , if you do, you will experience a happiness you have never known as you are filled with utter joy in His presence with eternal pleasures to boot.

God is so good, and as Paul said I have learned to be content with what could appear, at times, like misfortune or unhappiness for there were many times that I  had very little and , at times, I had so much, but in His presence I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I can proudly say I don’t need to wait ten years to know that I am happy now; I can say it right now,  right here for all to hear it. Thank you God for setting me free from the weight of life for your yoke is easy and your burdens are light, and that is something my friends to be happy about…

May God Reign Forever and Ever!
